Week 9- Tutorial Task

part 1
Essay Plan

The question that I chose for my essay is:
-Does the extensive use of computer/video games have an adverse impact on the health of young people.   What are the most recent papers? Clarify what both sides of the argument claim and only then offer your reasoned opinion based on facts.

http://www.techaddiction.ca/video_game_addiction_pictures.html

I chose this topic for my essay because it really sound appealing to me and this is a major topic in the world today. Kids of all ages play play video games of all sorts, and the health effects of the video games are always in debate. Some may say that video games have no health effect of the kids for the reasoning that it is all a non-fictional. However others argue that manner video games do effect a child's health both mentally and physiologically. There are many scholars that have argued from each side and there are numerous resources and scholarly articles that back up each opinion. I will look into this writing and write about each standpoint in my essay. After that I will then draw my own conclusion based upon the research that I have come across.

part 2
Political Participation Via the Internet

This week we were given the task to look into and participate in some different aspects of politics that exist online today. Here are some of the questions and tasks....

1. Sign an e-petition
After a little searching I came across a petition that calls for an immediate change in the Family Law Amendment. Currently this amendment is making its way through parliament, however in many people's mind it is taking way too long. This petition calls for immediate change therefore no more innocent children can be abused without the proper punishments for his or her abuser.

If you too would like to sign the petition here is the link-
    http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/urgent-change-for-our-children/sign.html

2. Respond to a professional blogger at a major news site.
For this one I decided comment on an article about how an Australian was part of a Ponzi scheme that stole over $400 million  from online poker players, worldwide on FultTiltPoker.com.  This article caught my eye because I played online poker back in the US and while I was most personally affected, it did affect because this let to all poker sites to be frozen and closed down. I personally didn't have a lot of money in it, but my account was frozen none the less. Check the article out for yourself....

3. What is Barak Obama up to today?
From what it seems Mr. Obama has been busy as usual in the past week and will be in the upcoming week. The current topic and issue at hand has to do with the United Nations and whether to except Palestinian as a state or not. In this upcoming week he will meet with both Palestinian President Mahmound Abbas and some Israeli leaders as well.

4.What are the Australian Government's plans to censor the internet (the so-called "Clean Feed")?
Within the next year the Australia internet providers will begin to "filter" what people can see and what they cannot. In theory ISP providers will block internet data such as child pornography from it users. The Government has yet to put this on paper and sign in because they keep changing the language of it, however Telstra and Optus, the two largest ISP providers in Australia, has volunteered to begin to filter the internet content made available to its user my this time next year.

5.When will the NBN get to your place? What are the benefits?
There is no exact date to when the National Broadband Network will be up and running in the Gold Coast. The Government has announced that a majority of the major cities in Australia will get the NBN within the next eight years. According to the Gold Coast City Council some of the benefits of the new service is-

  • connect 90 per cent of all Australian homes, schools and workplaces with broadband services, with speeds of up to 100 megabits per second - 100 times faster than those currently used by many households and businesses
  • connect all other premises in Australia with next generation wireless and satellite technologies that will deliver broadband speeds of 12 megabits per second
  • directly support up to 25,000 local jobs every year, on average, over the eight (8) year life of the project

Week 9- Response To Content

Can I say whatever I want on the Internet?

http://www.mattwardman.com

In America, we have rights; The Bills of Rights provides the American people their "god given rights". Included in this is the Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Press; meaning theoretically we can say and or write whatever it is we want to. I am not sure if this is the case in Australia, but in American as much as they tell us we can say and express our feelings however we want, we can absolutely not. There are many limitations to what one can say and put on the internet for others to say. So in reality no we do not have the freedom of speech and press.

There are very clear and fine lines that limit what one can say, specifically on the internet. For the most part there is good reason for this. For instance people cannot put information or say things that are directed at a group of individuals, and disrespect that in a racism or prejudice manner. Nor can people put up child pornography, even if they believe that it is okay. In recent months, Australia in particular, has been cracking down on this more then ever with the so called "Clean Feed". The Clean Feed is a essentially a government implemented filter for the internet.  "This means legally mandating Internet Service Providers (‘ISPs’) such as Optus, Telstra and iiNet to implement technical means to filter out a prescribed list of websites.  Sites containing images of child abuse, in particular child pornography, will be the initial focus of the list." (Maurushat, pg. 3)

So as it can be seen there really cannot say whatever we want on the internet...unless we want to deal with the repercussions of doing so.

Week 8- Tutorial Task

Film is ready to be revealed!

So today we finished up the movie! It took some time but we worked hard and were able to piece together all of our video clips to form a spectacular movie. I must say it did not go exactly accordingly to plan, however I personally feel that it came out better then I had imagined.

At first our plan was to put some popular music and video clips from movies in our movie, but then realized that was easier said then done. We knew of copyrights, but we did not realize the extent in which a copyright covers and protects certain content. For instance, in the beginning we had thought of using the "Jeopardy Theme" song. We thought if we gave credit to the producers, we could use it. However we were struck with reality when we realized it wasn't that simple. If we wanted to use the simple song we would have to go through a big long process and most likely have to pay to use it in the movie. Hence is why we decided to use Creative Commons Mixer Library to find our music. The same went for some of the video clips we were going to use at first. Between the copyright issues and the idea that the movie wouldn't flow as well, with the different video quality and such, we decided to disregard that part of the movie also. In the end even thought we changed up our plan a bit the movie came out great!

This is the moment you have been waiting so long for. The premier of "Keep Calm and Text On"...

Week 8- Response To Content

Creative Commons: The Internet's Show and Tell

Today in class we learned about Free Software. Free Software is essential programs and such that an individual has the right to download, use, share, and modify for free at their own will. Free software is beneficial to every because everyone is free to do whatever they want with it. Copyrights usually get in the way of people doing what they want with photos, videos, and software; however this idea of Free Software eliminates the issue of copyrights because the creator waives the rights based on the notion that whoever uses it will do the same.
http://world4software.blogspot.com/2011/01/open-source-free-software.html

A prime example of this is a website called Creative Commons. Creative Commons is a database that include things such as videos and photos that people are allowed to use for their own work. Copyrights disallow to to openly use these sorts of things whenever and however they want.  To achieve a vision of universal access, someone needed to provide a free, public, and standardized infrastructure that creates a balance between the reality of the Internet and the reality of copyright laws. That someone is Creative Commons." (CC) This site allows people with different talents and views to come together to help others use their creativity to the greatest extent. It creates a community in which people with the hopes and ambitions to help spread creativity can come together as one and help one another if if they are complete strangers.

Week 7- Tutorial Task

The Stresses of Texting filming begins!

This week we began to shoot the video footage for our movie. As a group we decided that we wanted to personally film the majority of our video because we thought it would bring more character to it. Before we actually starting filming we came up of a list of different things the boy could be doing, meaning why he was not answering the text. After coming up with a list of about twelve difference scenarios, we decided that we would use movie clips for about three or four of them; while the rest we would film ourselves.

Courtesy of GeekForceFive.com
The filming went very smoothly for the most part; much to our surprise we got all of the filming done during class time! The first couple we were able to film in the hall way and they came out really well. Then we decided to film a couple of scenes at one of the village apartments; at this point things began to take a turn. I was the lucky contestant that got selected to play the role of the boy in the movie; one of the scenarios was that "I" fell down the stairs. So it was quite the project figuring out a way to get me to fall down the stair without killing myself; it was certainly not as easy as I had planned. But I am still here to tell about it, so it was not too bad. All in all though our filming came out much better then I had expected and I am very satisfied with the footage we are going to use.

Week 7- Response To Content

Wikipedia: Is it all that is appears to be?

http://ohinternet.com/Wikipedia

More or less when you type anything into a search engine, one of the first results is going to be an page from Wikipedia. In the last few yearsWikipedia has become the go to web site to find information of any sorts. It is  "an international project that uses Wiki software to collaboratively create an encyclopedia. (Voss, pg.1)  But the really question up for debate is whether or not it is useful. I feel Wikipedia is absolutely useful, but only to a certain extent; It is useful to find information out, however the the information is not reliable enough to be used in an academic paper. Personally I feel like Wikipedia is an excellent place to start any paper. If you read the section on a given topic I believe you get a very good idea, sometimes detailed more then other times, and a very good outline of everything. From there, one can then movie on an more or less validate and look further in depth into parts of the given topic.

The main issue with Wikipedia is that anyone can change the information on it; that is why some people are skeptical using it. It used to be that anyone could change the info, but today it is harder because you have to be a registered user in order to be able to change or add information. I personally have never attempted to change anything, but I have heard stories of people that have. Usually in they put up false information is lasts up there for a few days before it is corrected or removed. As I said before this was a couple of years ago, I would imagine that is is harder to change things and if you did in would get taken down very quickly.

So as I say I do think Wikipedia is very useful. Whether it is to get a complete broad outline of a research topic or help with a homework assignment, I find myself looking at it all the time. More so I find it extremely useful and reliable just to find the answer to everyday questions. If I randomly wonder about a date or the name of a person, Wikipedia is the idea place to find the answer.

Week 6- Tutorial Task

Group Project - Making a Short Film

In the upcoming weeks, we have been given the task to create a short movie that covers some form of new communications technology. After putting so ideas on the table and some debate, our group came up with the idea of texting messaging and the time it takes for someone to respond. As hard as it may be to admit, we have all sat impatiently, just waiting for the other person to respond. While it may only take them a few minutes to answer, it usually feels like an eternity; during which time we ponder what in the world they may be doing. We decided our movie would be based on this idea of sitting, waiting, and just wishing the other person would respond to the text message.

We all have been in this situation a time or two....

As a group we thought this would be a good idea because it is something we can all relate to. When you text someone, you cannot see their reaction; it is not like talking to them in person. So when you are waiting for a response, so many things run through your head; did they not look at it, are they busy, were they offended, etc. Our film is going to take all of this into consideration and the film is going to show what runs through a girls head after she talks to a boy and he does not answer instantly. The minor details have not yet been decided, but this is a rough outline. I feel like our group came up with a great idea and it is going to make for a n awesome movie!

The Downfall of Hollywood?

http://mafiachance.com/images/view/94/hollywoodjpg.html

Since the birth of Hollywood in 1895, Hollywood has endured changes for better and for worst. For the most part then have progressed at a steady and constant rate and have adapted accordingly to peoples preferences. Hollywood has given people what they wanted; everything from High Definition to the 3D home movies. But given today's day and age of technology, will Hollywood be able to keep this up and stay alive. Today the norm is to simply download a movie online or rent it easily from online rental places such as Netflix. Personally, I feel like Hollywood is being brought down by the internet.

Some may argue that the internet helps promote the Hollywood and the movie busy; while I would agree with that statement there is a positive and negative to every scenario. The internet allows for people to watch movies for free, or with Netflix as a very small fee. Before the internet people would have to buy movies and therefore the producers and movie companies would get compensated for their work. Since people can watch them for free online, they have no reason to go purchase them from the store. Therefore not as many copies get sold and essentially Hollywood does not get paid as much as it potentially could. This goes for movie theaters too. People can even watch movies that are currently in theaters; therefor people do not spend as much money there either, which dampers the movie companies earnings. This past summer, in America, the movie attendance was tho lowest it has been in the last 15 years. To sum it all up I believe the internet is bringing down Hollywood from a money standpoint. There is going to come a point were Hollywood simply runs out of money. I certainly cannot see it being within the near future, but somewhere down the road that is what is going to happen.

Week 5- Response To Content

In class we watched the beginning of the film Rubber. This movie was interesting to say the least, but most of all I found it intriguing because I payed close attention to the framing of the movie and the types of shots that were taken. We had just gone over all the different types of shots in the lecture and I had never really thought much into the concept so really thought about it while we watched the film. It would take forever to go over all the different types of shot that took place in the first 20 minutes of the film, but there were a couple that really jumped out at me. The first one was the scene that the tire was still in the ground. At first the camera was taking a "Long Shot" of the deserted area with random thing lying around. This was to true the idea of the Long Shot because it gave of us, the viewer, and idea of where, when, and who the scene was about. More specifically the camera then changed to a  "Big Close-Up" shot; when the camera zoomed in and solely focused on the tire itself. By the camera being this close to the tire we were able to see the emotion of the tire. It was shaking uncontrollably before it shook itself loose from the ground. Due to the shot sizes during this scene, the viewer was really able to get a sense of what was going on. If there was just one shot size, say at a "Medium Long Shot", there would not be the same effect on the viewer. Another scene that the scene shot played a pivotal role was when the bunny rabbit and the tire where facing off. The switching between shot size really gave a sense and made you feel like you were really there right between the tire and rabbit. At first there was a "Long Shot", but then there the camera switched to a "Big Close-up" and switched between the tire and rabbit. This shot size really gave us a feeling of the situation and details of what each character was feeling at the height of the tension. As it can be seen, I thought this movie was a really good choice to watch because it really showed good examples of all aspects of film, particularly the shot sizes and the effects that each of them have on the viewer.

Week 4- Tutorial Task

There are over 750 million active users on Facebook, and on any given day 50% of those users log on to the social networking site. (Facebook, 2011) Like any site that one joins, Facebook has terms of policy that every person you signs up for has to obey. My question is how many people actually know what the terms that we have all agreed to actually are? If I had to put a number on it I would say it is in the thousands. That's right, out of 750 million people, only a couple hundred thousand people actually know what they have agreed to when they signed up for the site. Let's be honest here, whenever we install a new computer program or sign up for a new email address very few people actually read the terms. The majority of us just check the little box and click "next"; I know that's what I do. So what are we actually agreeing to when we except these terms? I just recently took a look at Facebook's terms and they are interesting to say the least. For the most part they are all ideas and concepts that you would assume for a site such as Facebook; such as "You will not post content that: is hateful, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence." (Facebook, 2011) However, there are also some terms that I would have never fathomed would be on there. There are actual conditions that say you must keep your information up to date and current. One of the most interesting terms though is that "You will not use your personal profile for your own commercial gain." (Facebook, 2011) There are numerous occasions when I go on Facebook and my friends statuses are either selling something or promoting there place of employment. Apparently, according the Facebooks terms, this is illegal and you agreed you would not do this when you signed up for your account. These two examples here are only 2 surprising things I came across. Honetly you have to read the terms yourself to get the full effect of what I'm saging. Shortly after starting to read the terms page on Facebook, I began to realize that I really had no, even slight, idea of what I was agreeing to when I checked the box when I signed up. I guess from now on I will take the extra 5 minutes and read before I agree to something, and I would suggest you do the same.

Week 4- Response To Content

I personally do not play a lot of computer games anymore; a few years back however, I really was into the Call of Duty games. I absolutely love playing them and thought that they were the greatest games in the world. I would still play them, but it is worthless trying to get them to run on my current laptop. I cannot really put a finger on why I love these types of games so much, but I really do. I think part of it is because it is something that you can say I grew up around. The Metal of Honor games are based on past wars such as WWI and WWII. Growing up, and still to this day, me and my dad would watch war movies all the time. So it is something that I love and being able to "act" out what I have seen is something I really find enjoyable. Also  have grandfathers in the past wars, so again I guess you have to say it has a place in my heart. More then anything I think its the genre that draws me to the Medal of Honor type games.
Growing up, whenever I went to the store I would find a game that looked cool and then directly look at the rating. My mom was one of the mothers that would, under no circumstance, allow me to get a game that was rated M for "Mature". I never really could go against her because I wasn't old enough to buy it my self, so I was always heartbroken because the best games were always rated M. I would also attempt to explain to her that the rating were worthless, and that is nothing more then what happens in the movies. Sadly, my explanations had no affect on my mother's take on the matter. However, to this day I will argue that the rating are more or less senseless. On their website, the Entertainment Software Rating Board claims that the "ratings are designed to provide concise and impartial information about the content in the computer and video games so consumers, especially parents, can make and informed purchased decision." (ESRB, 2011) To an extent I believe that the ratings are an okay tool. For instance, for something like pornographic material I think it is a good thing. However, I do not believe it is a good system for rating violence. I truly feel that it is an individuals mind set, not the game that effects a person when it come to violence. If a person has the mind set that what he or she is doing in the video game is okay to do in real life, then I personally feel like that is a red flag. I just don't feel that a video game has a big enough effect to persuade an individual to condone violence. There are numerous other aspects that have a much bigger impact on that mind set; such as family life and his or her physiological mind set as a whole. With that said, I do feel like there is a level at which it does effect changes in people, but I think that is in really rare cases. For example, I know there is a Mafia game in which the user cuts off people's body parts; something like that I think takes everything to a whole new extreme. I feel something like that should not even be available on the market. Again I feel those are rare circumstances. All in all I strongly feel that the video game violence does not have a great effect on its users.

Week 3- Tutorial Task

Stephen Stockwell had his first article in an academic journal in 1981. "Kuranda Police Shooting" was published in the February edition of Legal Source Bulletin. The database in which I found this article was the HeinOnline Law Journal Library, which I found through the Griffith University Library system.

Governor Slugwell first appeared in three comics between the1985 and 1986. First in '85 he appeared in "To Take Arms Against a Sea of Trouble" and " When the Shoes Aren't Worth the Shine". Then later in 1986 he appeared in "Epilogue". I found this information out by using the Underground and Independent Comics Database.

In Nigeria, government officials have just recently reassured its people that there is no need to worry about the recent warning released by The World Health Organisation. WHO had recently reported that mobile phone can cause Cancer; but the government is explain how there is no solid evidence that can draw that conclusion. Therefore at this time there is no need for panic.

In the 1982 movie, Blade Runner, Holden asks Leon about his mother. In response, "Leon looks shocked, surprised. But the needles in the computer barely move. Holden goes for the inside of his coat. But big Leon is faster. His laser burns a hole the size of a nickel through Holden's stomach. Unlike a bullet, a laser causes no impact. It goes through Holden's shoulder and comes out of his back, clean as a whistle. Like a rag doll he falls back into the seat. Big slow Leon is already walking away, but he stops, turns, and with a little smile of satisfaction fires through the back of the seat." (Francher, Peoples, Kibee, 1982)

In the middle of 1999, the music industry was forever changed by a college kid and his uncle. Shawn Fanning was attending Boston University, when he decided to create an online music database. After 60 straight hours of programming, Napster was born. (Napster: Then and Now) Napster brought to if every music lovers dream; every song, album, discography at their finger tips. For free. That's right, Shawn Fanning had created a program know as peer-to-peer sharing that allowed users to share mp3 file with one another over the Internet. So an individual on one side of the world could "take" a copy of a song from someone on the other side of the world and make it available on there computer for their personal use. While the original Napster lived a very short life, it was larger than life. "At the peak of Napster;s popularity in late 2000 and early 2001, some 60 million users around the world were freely exchanging digital mp3 files. (The death spiral of Napster begins, 2001) Unfortunately for Fanning and his fellow users, the Federal Government intervened in the file sharing database in the middle of 2001. In March of this year Napster began to have to comply with a federal federal court order, which blocked the transfer of copyrighted material from being shared; such as songs and albums.(The death spiral of Napster begins, 2001) Understandably, big named band and groups began to file lawsuits against Napster because in the whole process they were the one taking the bad end of the stick. Napster drastically lowered music sales rates. Why would a consumer buy something that they could instantly get for free? As a result the downfall of Napster began. Today Napster is still around, but it has never come close to what it once was. Credit must be given to the founders and employees of Napster for keeping it going to this day. After countless lawsuits and court cases, they have somehow still managed to stay afloat. In the last few years, they did end up going bankrupt; however, that did not mean the end of them. At first Roxio purchased them. They later sold the copyrights and brand name to Best Buy, who is the present day owner of Napster. While Napster may have been short lived, it will forever be remember as a game changer. It not only created a new market, but changed music forever. While there are still CD's, music is purchased by most on the computer, over the Internet. All thanks to a clever 18 year in a dorm room, music can now instantly be accessed at our finger tips; thanks to the government though, it cost us $0.99...

Week 3- Response To Content

I found this last lecture to be very interesting to say the least. It brought up many interesting topics and ideas, however one thing particularly really got me thinking. At one point we started talking about the World Wide Web. As we got further into the creation of the Web, it came up that the Internet and the Web are not the same. At first I thought that this was absolutely absurd. I am no computer engineer, but I do know a fair share about computers and I'm the type of guy that people usually call when they have a problem with their computer; however, I must say I always thought that these two things were one in the same. After listening and hearing the explanation of how the two differ, it made pretty good sense that the Web and the Internet are two separate things. After the lecture I went back, still curious and did a little hunting around. I found one really good explanation that I thought really put everything in perspective. "The World Wide Web is a way of accessing information over the medium of the Internet. It is an information-sharing model that is build on top of the Internet." (Webopedia, 2011) I know in the lecture that same thing was basically said, but this really sealed the deal and made me see the difference. For all this time I have been guilty of interchanging the Internet and Web, while they are two completely different things. Now though, it is clear as day that they are two separate forms of networking and computer technology.
